Who We Are Looking For:

Richmond Furniture Scheme (RFS) is seeking a Skilled Volunteer with experience in business case development and strategic analysis to assess an exciting expansion opportunity. The ideal volunteer will have a strong background in business planning, financial modelling, and market analysis.

Project Brief:

Richmond Furniture Scheme is an established charity dedicated to reducing waste, tackling furniture poverty, and supporting people in need across South West London. The charity has been offered a lease on a property in the neighbouring borough of Hounslow following the closure of another local furniture reuse charity.
They would like a Skilled Volunteer to help develop a comprehensive business case to help RFS evaluate the feasibility and sustainability of opening a “Hounslow Furniture Scheme”. Using RFS’s proven business model, demographic data from Hounslow Council, and market insight, the volunteer will help shape a clear plan for growth.
The Skilled Volunteer will help:
  • Analyse the market need in Hounslow, assessing demand for affordable furniture, potential donation sources, and revenue streams.
  • Review and adapt RFS’s current business model to identify how it could scale effectively in a new borough.
  • Develop an ideal organisational structure and operational approach for the proposed expansion.
  • Build a business case and financial projections covering a 3–5 year period.
  • Provide an objective assessment of viability.

Who You’ll Be Supporting:

Richmond Furniture Scheme (RFS) is a community-based furniture reuse charity that gives new life to donated furniture and refurbished appliances—saving the planet one sofa at a time. Each year, RFS diverts hundreds of tonnes of usable furniture from landfill, while providing essential household items to people in need across Richmond and beyond. They also offer volunteering, training, and employment opportunities that build confidence, skills, and community connections.

Your impact:

Your input as a Skilled Volunteer will help Richmond Furniture Scheme make an informed, evidence-based decision about expanding into Hounslow. By producing a clear and credible business case, you’ll directly contribute to the growth of a sustainable, community-driven model that empowers people, protects the environment, and ensures that everyone—regardless of circumstance—can have a furnished home.

Please note: This project has an estimated time commitment of 2 hours per week for 4 months, totalling around 32 hours. All Link UP London Skilled Volunteering Projects are designed to work flexibly around the schedule of the Skilled Volunteer. This time commitment can be agreed and spread over a time frame that works for both the Skilled Volunteer and the SGO they are supporting.
