Who We Are Looking For:

Career Compass is seeking a Skilled Volunteer with expertise in email marketing to review their current email communications, advise on copy and strategy, and provide guidance on improving engagement across distinct audiences.

Project Brief:

Career Compass reaches schools and students primarily through email, and is looking to build on this foundation by ensuring their communications are as compelling and effective as possible. With a growing network of partner schools and student subscribers, there is a clear opportunity to sharpen their messaging, improve open and click-through rates, and ensure their programmes receive the visibility they deserve.

The Skilled Volunteer will:
  • Review existing email content and design, providing actionable recommendations on both copy and visual presentation for two key audiences: partner schools and student subscribers.
  • Advise on email marketing strategy, including best practice around send times, frequency, subject lines, and list growth.
  • Develop clear guidance on email copywriting best practice to equip the Career Compass team to produce more engaging communications independently going forward.

Who You’ll Be Supporting:

Career Compass is a social mobility charity with a bold vision: a society where every student’s future is shaped by their ability and ambition — not their background. They deliver career skills workshops, industry overview sessions, one-to-one mentoring, and work experience placements to sixth-form students from disadvantaged backgrounds across the UK. Their programmes are designed not just to open doors, but to give young people the confidence and knowledge to walk through them. 90% of students report increased confidence after attending their sessions, with over 6,000 students supported annually across more than 500 schools.

Your Impact:

By strengthening Career Compass‘s email communications, the Skilled Volunteer will help ensure that more state-educated young people from disadvantaged backgrounds can access the workshops, placements, and mentoring that could shape the trajectory of their careers. Improved outreach means fewer students missing out on opportunities simply because they never heard about them — a small change in communications strategy with the potential for profound, lasting impact on real young lives.

Please note: This project has an estimated time commitment of 2 hours per week for 2 months, totalling around 16 hours. All Link UP London Skilled Volunteering Projects are designed to work flexibly around the schedule of the Skilled Volunteer. This time commitment can be agreed and spread over a time frame that works for both the Skilled Volunteer and the SGO they are supporting.
