Who We Are Looking For:

Why Care is seeking a Skilled Volunteer with experience in software engineering and cyber security to conduct a thorough review of their newly developed web app. Experience with Firestore, Google Cloud Platform, TypeScript and React.js would be preferred.

Project Brief:

Why Care has developed a bespoke web app designed to modernise the foster carer assessment process, and it is already being used by prospective carers today. As the platform grows in reach and impact, Why Care is keen to ensure it is technically robust, secure, and well-positioned for future development.

The Skilled Volunteer will:
  • Audit the platform’s existing technology, reviewing its architecture and overall build quality.
  • Assess the platform’s security, identifying any vulnerabilities or areas of risk.
  • Advise on and support areas of development, helping to shape the platform’s next stage of growth.

Who You’ll Be Supporting:

Why Care is a pioneering social enterprise transforming foster care recruitment across the UK, partnering with local authorities to recruit and support a more diverse range of skilled foster carers. Founded specifically to address the critical shortage and high turnover of foster carers, they are dedicated to transforming the foster care system through innovative recruitment, comprehensive training, and robust support. Their approach combines lived experience with professional insight, using inclusive, data-driven assessment techniques to onboard and prepare carers more effectively. With over 80,000 children currently in foster care in England, their mission — ensuring every child in need finds a stable and loving home — could not be more urgent or more necessary.

Your Impact:

A stronger, more secure platform means that Why Care can support more local authorities to bring compassionate foster carers through the system, faster. At a time of national shortage of foster carers, your contribution could directly help more vulnerable children access the stable, loving homes they deserve — making a tangible difference to some of the most at-risk young people in the country.

Please note: This project has an estimated time commitment of 2 hours per week for 3 months, totalling around 24 hours. All Link UP London Skilled Volunteering Projects are designed to work flexibly around the schedule of the Skilled Volunteer. This time commitment can be agreed and spread over a time frame that works for both the Skilled Volunteer and the SGO they are supporting.
