Helping Deaba CIC Grow with Strategy and Planning

We’re excited to share the story of how Dave Wakeman, a Skilled Volunteer, worked with Akua Deaba, founder of Deaba CIC, to help shape the organisation’s future and strengthen its impact in the community.

The Organisation

Deaba CIC is all about bringing communities together and supporting health and well-being through engaging activities. From community lunches and sports clubs to disco dance sessions, they create spaces where people can connect, build confidence, and feel part of something bigger. As their work has grown, so has the need for a clear plan to guide their next steps and make sure they can keep delivering for the people who rely on them.

The Project

Deaba CIC wanted support in developing an organisational strategy to clarify priorities, set clear goals, and create a roadmap for both the short and long term. Dave worked closely with the team to review how they were currently operating, provide guidance on strategic direction, and help craft a detailed strategy document. This document now gives everyone at Deaba CIC a shared sense of purpose and a clear plan to keep moving forward.

The Skilled Volunteer

Dave brought over 25 years of experience in strategy, business development, marketing, and brand consulting to the project. His expertise, combined with a collaborative and hands-on approach, meant he could offer practical advice while genuinely connecting with the team. His support helped the organisation focus on what mattered most and gave the directors confidence to tackle their next steps.

The Impact

Thanks to Dave’s guidance, Deaba CIC now has clearer objectives and stronger internal communication, making it easier for directors to share the workload. External communications like marketing and social media are more consistent, and core systems covering insurance, accountancy, and fundraising are more robust. The team has also welcomed a permanent volunteer to support marketing and fundraising, with plans to bring on two more directors.

Akua reflected on the project, saying, “This work is helping us connect the community and build a bigger, stronger, and more supportive environment for everyone involved.”

Dave found the experience incredibly rewarding too: “I loved being part of this project. Seeing my ideas making a real difference and hearing stories about the impact Deaba CIC has on the community was really gratifying.”

Making a Lasting Difference

This project shows just how powerful skilled volunteering can be. With Dave’s help, Deaba CIC now has a solid strategy, clear processes, and renewed confidence to grow and continue making a real difference. By connecting skilled volunteers with grassroots organisations, Link UP helps charities like Deaba CIC strengthen communities across London.
